A Journey Through Numerical Symbolism
How an academic project transformed into a portal dedicated to understanding popular beliefs about numbers in different cultures.
Our story began with a simple question: why does the number 13 avoid floors in Western buildings, while 4 is avoided in parts of Asia? Driven by academic curiosity, we launched a research project in 2018 to document these cultural traditions. What started as an informal blog quickly grew, attracting the attention of anthropologists, linguists, and history enthusiasts. In 2020, we formalized our mission with the launch of the portal unluckynumbers.com, creating an accessible repository that explores the role of these numbers in architecture, language, and social practices. Today, we continue to expand our archive, promoting an educational dialogue about how these beliefs shape and reflect society.
